What is Concrete Chemical Admixture?
As per American Concrete Institute (ACI CONCRETE TERMINOLOGY) 2018 - Concrete Chemical Admixture is a liquid or dispersible powder, used as an ingredient in a cementitious mixture to improve its economy and/or properties in the plastic and/or hardened state. As per Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) 2020 – Concrete Chemical Admixture is a material other than water, aggregate, or hydraulic cement used as an ingredient of concrete and added to concrete before or during its mixing to modify its properties.

Why Chemical Admixture is used in Concrete?
Chemical admixtures are the ingredients in concrete other than cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and water that are added to the mix immediately before or during mixing. The history of chemical admixtures is as old as the concrete & presently they are an integral part of concrete technology. Producers use chemical admixtures primarily to reduce the cost of concrete construction; to modify or improve the properties of fresh & hardened concrete; and to ensure the required quality of concrete during mixing, transporting, placing, and curing. Successful use of admixtures depends on the use of appropriate methods of batching and concreting. This successful incorporation of chemical admixtures conforms the effective modification of the properties of concrete such as heat of hydration, enhance compressive strength, accelerate or retard the setting time, improve workability, help in water reduction, aid in entrain air and finally improve the impermeability and durability characteristics. The effectiveness of chemical admixtures depends on several factors including: type and amount of cement in concrete, water cement ratio, mixing time, slump, and temperatures of the concrete and air.

What is the Standard/Specification of Concrete Chemical Admixture?
As per Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) 2020 Chapter 5.2.4.5 Water reducing admixtures, retarding admixtures, accelerating admixtures, water reducing and retarding admixtures, and water reducing and accelerating admixtures, if used in concrete, shall conform to "Standard Specification for Chemical Admixtures for Concrete" (ASTM C494/C494M) or "Standard Specification for Chemical Admixtures for use in Producing Flowing Concrete" (ASTM C1017/C1017M).
